How do I add phone photos to my main photo library?

Choose one intake route

Decide whether phone images will arrive through a photo app, a cloud download, or a direct cable transfer. Use one route consistently for a given phone so you can tell what has already arrived. Create an Incoming/Phone folder or an equivalent temporary album for each transfer, named with a date range such as 2026-09 Phone import. Do not drag files directly into many finished event folders during the first pass; that makes omissions and repeats harder to spot. If your main library uses a managed photo application, learn whether it copies files into its library or only points to their current location before changing the source files.

Import a complete batch first

Copy the entire selected camera roll range into the intake area, including live-photo companions, videos, and original image formats if you keep them. Leave the transfer running until its completion message appears, then compare the item count shown by the phone or export screen with the count in the intake area. Counts can differ when a system groups related items, so investigate a meaningful difference rather than assuming it is harmless. If a cloud service is involved, wait until full-size files are available rather than organizing thumbnails or temporary placeholders.

Sort into your library deliberately

Review the incoming batch by date and event. Move or add the keeper photos to the relevant year, month, and event destination, or import them into the appropriate managed library. Keep a photo’s original capture date when possible; that date makes later searching and timeline views more useful. Give ambiguous items a brief caption or keyword while the details are fresh. Use albums for a trip, celebration, or person that spans more than one folder, rather than making duplicate file copies just to create a grouping.

Check before clearing the intake

Open a few photos and videos from the final location, including an older item, a recent item, and a file with a less common format. Confirm that dates, orientation, and any intended captions are present. Keep the incoming batch and the phone originals unchanged until that check is complete and the main library is included in your normal backup routine. Avoid bulk cleanup commands or automatic duplicate removal while you are still combining a first import; similar-looking images may be separate moments or edited versions.
