Count copies, not devices

Begin with the photo library you regularly organize as copy one. Add one separate local copy, such as a copy on a storage device kept apart from the computer holding the main library. Add another copy in a different location, often through an online storage service or a device stored elsewhere. A phone that only displays a synced library may not count as a separate copy, so identify what files it truly holds.

Use different storage paths

The two-media part is about reducing one shared point of failure. A practical combination can be a computer or primary photo service plus a separate local drive and an online copy. You do not need every photo workflow to look alike. What matters is that a problem affecting one location or one type of storage is less likely to affect every copy. Keep the arrangement simple enough that you will maintain it.

Include what makes photos usable

Plan for more than image files when your app keeps information separately. Your secondary copies may need folders, original files, edited exports, catalog files, album lists, captions, ratings, and a brief note explaining the library structure. Make a checklist for your own setup. A complete-looking folder of images is less helpful if the names, dates, or organizational work you rely on are missing.

Review the rule on a schedule

Once each season, compare your copy map with reality. Check that recent imports reached the local and away-from-home copies, open a varied sample, and note the last successful update date. If your collection has grown beyond the available space, expand or reorganize the backup before the next import. Keep a short record of what you checked so a future review does not start from guesswork.
