Home Wi-Fi question

Why is my device connected to Wi-Fi but unable to access the internet?

Questions with the same meaning and scope are grouped here; questions with different scope stay separate.

Quick answer

Current answer

A Wi-Fi connection only proves that the device reached the router. Check whether another device can use the internet, then decide whether to troubleshoot one device, the home connection, or a specific website.

Test the scope first

On the affected device, try two ordinary websites or apps. Then try one other device on the same Wi-Fi. This gives a practical split: one-device trouble, whole-home trouble, or a problem limited to one service.

If only one device is affected

1. Turn Wi-Fi off and back on. 2. Restart the device. 3. Forget the Wi-Fi network and join it again with the current password. 4. Temporarily disable a VPN or custom network filter if you use one, then test again. 5. Check whether the device can open a different website or app.

If several devices are affected

Check the router or mesh app for an internet-connection warning. Check the modem or gateway for an outage indication. Restart the router only once and allow it to finish starting; repeated restarts can delay recovery.

Read the outcome

If every device has Wi-Fi but no internet, the shared router-to-ISP path is the likely direction. If other devices work, stay with the affected device. If normal websites work but only one site or app fails, it is not a general Wi-Fi outage.

Get help when

Contact the ISP when the modem or gateway shows no service, or all devices remain offline after basic checks. Contact the device maker if only that device cannot reach the internet after reconnecting. Do not factory-reset the router just to diagnose a single device.

Before making disruptive changes

  • A VPN or custom filter should be restored after a temporary test.
Scope & boundaries
Applies when
Use as the broad state when: - Wi‑Fi association has succeeded; - internet reachability is unavailable or reported unavailable; - the user has not yet established whether one or all devices are affected.
Does not apply when
Excluded when: the device cannot join Wi‑Fi → A1-07; user already knows all devices are affected → A1-13 is more specific; user already knows only one device is affected → A1-14 is more specific; only some websites fail while general internet works → A1-15..
