Home Wi-Fi question
Why does Wi-Fi say the password is wrong when I think it is correct?
Questions with the same meaning and scope are grouped here; questions with different scope stay separate.
Quick answer
Current answer
Re-enter the password carefully, then check that the device is trying to join the right network name. If the error persists, remove the saved network on that device and reconnect before changing the router password.
Rule out the simple mismatch
Homes often have similarly named networks, old network names, guest networks, or both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names. Select the exact network you mean to join and type the password again rather than relying on autofill. Check capital letters, punctuation, spaces, and whether the device keyboard is entering the characters you expect.
Refresh the saved connection
1. On the affected device, forget or remove the saved Wi-Fi network. 2. Restart the device if it has been trying repeatedly. 3. Select the correct network name again. 4. Enter the current password manually. 5. Test another device only to learn whether the problem is one device or the whole network.
What the result tells you
If other devices can join with the same password, focus on the affected device’s saved settings or software. If no device can join, verify the password in the router or mesh management app before changing it. If the network is not visible at all, that is a different problem from a rejected password.
Change passwords deliberately
Changing the Wi-Fi password disconnects every device that uses it, including smart-home equipment that may be difficult to reconnect. Do it only after confirming the current password is not working across devices, and record the new password in a secure place.
Get help when
Contact the device maker if one device repeatedly rejects a known-good password after forgetting the network. Contact the router maker if the router app does not show a clear current network name or password setting.

Scope & boundaries
- Applies when
- Use when: - the Wi‑Fi network is visible; - connection failure explicitly appears as incorrect password / authentication failure.
- Does not apply when
- Excluded when: generic join failure without password/authentication symptom → A1-07; network invisible → A1-06; already connected, no internet → A1-12..
